On the other side of the world our friends in the Philippins are obsessed with round shapes. For the entire holiday period, they dine around round tables and gift each other round fruits and coins. On New Year’s Eve, they wear polka dots to celebrate the circle of life.
In Latin America, and especially in Argentina, Colombia and Brazil, whoever wants to travel in the new year has to walk around the block with an empty suitcase after midnight.
In Chinathere are wishing trees. On New Year’s Eve, people write their wishes on a piece of paper and throw it at one of these sacred trees. If the paper sticks to a branch, the wish will come true in the new year.
Because of the time difference,New Zealandis the first country in the world to celebrate the New Year. In Wellington and other cities it’s traditional to step outside at midnight with your best pots and pans and bang them as loudly as possible.
Every year InCape Verde the New Year’s Eve race is a sporting event that brings together famous African athletes and locals. It takes place right on New Year’s Eve and is also called the New Year’s Eve Midnight Bath, since at the end people jump into the ocean to wash off the previous year.
In more superstitious countries such as Greece, there’s a belief that the first guest to step into the house brings either happiness, if they step over the threshold with their right foot forward, or sorrow, if they step over the threshold with their left foot forward and come empty handed.
Now that you’re the expert on New Year’s traditions across the world, you can no longer be pretend to be caught unaware when you travel! And on that note, Happy New Year from Kalliopé, in every language! 🙂
